EST. 1999 | THE STORY

Steve Ooi, Founder of The Tile People in 1999, started as a tiler and then began sourcing and importing tile and stone for his larger commercial projects. Glenn Obery and Steve met on site and soon partnered – growing the business – now in its 25th year. Later – Glenn's father, Kelvin Obery, joined the team and was instrumental in forming the facade part of the business in both New Zealand and Australia. Anthony Ferdinands, another key part of The Tile People’s growth from those early days, oversees all projects at an operational level.

In 2019, Lindy Messam made her way back from an extensive career in London and New York leading sales for the global luxury brand – The Rug Company. She saw the opportunity to bring The Rug Company’s hand-knotted rugs to New Zealand and partnered with Steve and Glenn to create Design Central. Shortly after, Design Central added another coveted brand to the mix – Soho Home – a unique collection of lighting, furniture and accessories – allowing a full design offering.
