Project overview | Located in central Auckland, Mount Albert Grammar School is one of Aotearoa’s largest secondary schools, with a roll of over 2,700 students. The Nairn Block forms part of the school’s long-term masterplan, adding new teaching spaces, a library, administration areas, and a Whare Wānanga.

The design responds to the site’s historical context and operational constraints, integrating new facilities within a live school environment. The building complements the existing heritage architecture while meeting the spatial and functional demands of a large and diverse student population.

Design objective | The design brief focused on three key outcomes: maintaining the value of traditional classroom layouts, improving circulation across the busy campus, and establishing a defined cultural entry to the central courtyard.

The façade strategy was developed to balance heritage character with modern performance. GRC concrete panels were selected to reflect the solidity of traditional masonry while providing a lightweight, efficient system. These elements are paired with glazed curtain walls and precision-engineered louvres, modelled for optimal daylight and thermal control.

Integration of the Wharenui, Te Puna Wānanga, reinforces the school’s cultural identity and establishes a strong visual and spatial link between traditional values and contemporary design. The result is a refined, high-performing façade that supports both the architectural heritage and future growth of the school.

The school’s logo was etched into selected GRC panels, providing a subtle branded detail within the façade composition.
